Our goal in this site is to provide information about community service opportunities for learners in retirement in the Cambridge and Boston area.

We invite learners in retirement to share information about opportunities for serving the community and to share their own experiences as volunteers.

826 Boston

826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life. 826 Boston’s free services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with individualized attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Volunteers support students through tutoring, homework help, subject-specific support and creative writing projects on weekday afternoons or evenings. You can learn about volunteer opportunities with young people by clicking  here and then clicking “Get Involved” on the 826 Boston web page.

The Valedictorian Project

The Valedictorian Project (thevalproj.org) is beginning its fourth year of operation.  It was created to break down barriers to equity and close the education-to-employment gap for high-achieving students from urban schools. TVP recruits and train mentors who see the importance of helping such students, who in most cases are first-generation college attendees, and are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Read more (from LIR Steve Rosenfeld)
